An AC current attenuation assessment is carried out using a Pipeline Current Mapper, or PCM, to qualitatively rate coating quality and identify pipeline sites with the most severe coating holidays (defects). The pipeline is subjected to an AC current, and coating degradation is found and prioritized based on the degree of current attenuation.
With impressed current cathodic protection systems activated, AC current attenuation surveys may be carried out. When performing pipeline coating quality testing, it is advised that sacrificial anodes—also known as galvanic anodes—that are connected to the pipeline, either directly or through a test station, be disconnected, whenever it is practical to do so. This will prevent signal loss and improve current flow down the pipeline.
