
In power generation with thermal power stations and desalination plants, all experience has shown that the most severe corrosion problems have been located in the cooling water systems. Especially when the cooling water has been sea water, fresh or back fish water. This has been the case both for fossil-fueled power stations and atomic power stations.
The main reason for this is of course that seawater and back fish water as such are very corrosive electrolyte but there is also several other factors prevailing in cooling water systems, which in different ways may increase the corrosion rate of the materials used. Examples are :
- High water velocity and turbulent flow.
- Presence of impurities in the water.
- Fouling increasing localized corrosion.
- Chlorination of water.
Among other corrosion preventive measures, cathodic protection has been widely used in counteracting corrosion in many different parts of the cooling water systems. As generally being a very effective and reliable protective measure, cathodic protection has to a large extent been used with great success.
The need for cathodic protection of pumps is significantly related to the design of the vertical turbine pump. There is also a risk of crevice corrosion on the internal parts of the pump in contact with water, especially during the periods when water is not flowing and stagnant water is in the pumps. Both galvanic and crevice corrosion can be avoided by using correctly designed CP Systems.
The detailed CP design cannot be completely standardized because of differences in design from one pump to another. In the case of the sacrificial method of the cathodic protection system, the anode design lifetime is by the requirement of routine maintenance of the pump at regular intervals, when the pump casing is reopened and coated reapplied and sacrificial anodes replaced.
